Reason to consult

Osteopath for tendinitis and sports tendinopathy

A tendinopathy is a tendon that has not coped with a load, often because something around it is not working: a stiff ankle, a hip that does not rotate, a badly aligned cleat, too fast a return to training. Trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound, I am installing the equipment at the practice in the coming months: to see the tendon, follow its progress and decide objectively on the return to sport.

The signs that bring people to consult

  • Achilles tendon pain in the morning or at the start of a run
  • Pain under or around the kneecap on the bike or on descents (patellar tendinopathy, patellofemoral syndrome)
  • Elbow pain (tennis elbow) in climbers, mountain bikers or at work
  • Shoulder pain in swimmers and triathletes
  • Gluteus medius or psoas pain in runners and cyclists

What I do during the session

  1. Precise examination of the tendon and the surrounding structures, soon complemented by ultrasound at the practice
  2. Looking for the biomechanical cause: mobility of neighbouring joints, technique, equipment, training load
  3. Hands-on treatment of the structures overloading the tendon
  4. Progressive tendon-loading programme and, for cyclists, correction of position or cleats

When to see a doctor first

Sudden pain with a snapping sensation, total inability to use the limb or significant swelling require urgent medical attention (possible rupture).

All the signs for which I refer you to a doctor first

Osteopathy does not replace medical care. I work alongside your GP, your midwife or your paediatrician when necessary.

FAQ

Your questions

What is ultrasound used for in osteopathy?

It arrives at the practice in the coming months. It serves to see what the hand cannot: tendon thickening, calcification, bursitis, partial rupture. It makes it possible to follow progress from one session to the next and to decide on a return to sport on objective criteria. It does not replace a radiological examination prescribed by a doctor.

Physio or osteopath for an Achilles tendinopathy?

The two complement each other. The physiotherapist runs the rehabilitation over time, often on prescription and reimbursed: progressive loading of the tendon, several sessions a week. I look for what is overloading the tendon (stiff ankle, hip, shoe, stride, position on the bike), I treat it and I give you the loading programme to follow between sessions. If you already see a physio, I work alongside them. Allow several weeks: a tendon does not repair in one session.

Do I have to stop sport?

Rarely completely. A tendinopathy is treated by adapting the load, not by removing it. I offer you a progressive return plan.

Does my patellar tendinitis come from cycling?

Very often: saddle too low, cleats too far forward or rotated too far in, gears too big. Treatment works through the position as much as the tendon.
