Reason to consult

Osteopath for low back pain and back pain

Back pain is the number one reason for consulting at the practice. Lumbago after exertion, chronic low back pain from sitting, pain that returns on every bike ride or every ski season: in the vast majority of cases, the cause is mechanical and within reach of osteopathy.

The signs that bring people to consult

  • Band of pain across the lower back, stiffness in the morning
  • Sudden lock-up after exertion or an awkward movement (lumbago)
  • Pain that increases with prolonged sitting, in the car, at the desk
  • Low back pain on the bike after 1 to 2 hours in the saddle
  • Pain radiating into the buttock or thigh (see sciatica)

What I do during the session

  1. Examination of lumbar, pelvic, hip and diaphragm mobility
  2. Appropriate hands-on techniques: mobilisations, soft-tissue techniques, and manipulations only if they are useful and you agree. If you do not want to be “cracked”, say so when you arrive: I work differently, with the same aim
  3. Looking for the cause: workstation, position on the bike, sporting movement, sleep
  4. Simple mobility and core exercises, and correction of your cycling position if that is the cause

When to see a doctor first

Low back pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, urinary problems, weakness in one leg or night pain that wakes you needs a medical opinion before any session. I refer you if that is the case.

All the signs for which I refer you to a doctor first

Osteopathy does not replace medical care. I work alongside your GP, your midwife or your paediatrician when necessary.

A band of low back pain with electric shocks down the leg

The situation
A band of pain across the low back for three or four days, with electric sensations running down the right leg. Stretching and massage had changed nothing. An active person: Pilates, swimming and running. A few days earlier she had had a severe abdominal episode.
What the examination showed
The shocks down the leg were not true sciatica but a spasm of the piriformis muscle, in the right buttock. And the recent bowel episode had left tension at the back of the abdomen, pulling on the lumbar spine.
What we did
Gentle mobilisation of the pelvis and lumbar spine, muscle work with contract-relax techniques, work on both legs and especially the right buttock, and visceral work to release the attachments of the bowel at the back. Then home exercises, as videos in an app, to make sure they get done, and done well.
The result
By the end of the session, no more radiating pain in the leg and a clearly improved range of motion. The next day she had her full mobility back.

Every case is different: these stories illustrate the approach, they do not promise a result.

FAQ

Your questions

How many sessions for low back pain?

One or two sessions are often enough for lumbago. Chronic low back pain generally needs two to three sessions, then spaced-out follow-up if necessary. I tell you from the first consultation.

Can I come during an acute episode?

Yes. The techniques are adapted to the pain: nothing is forced. Call me, I can often see you within 48 hours.

Does my back pain come from my bike?

It is common: handlebar too far away, saddle too high, locked pelvis. I can treat the pain and correct the position in the same session, or during a bike fit.
