Reason to consult

Osteopath for neck pain, stiff neck and headaches

A stiff neck on waking, torticollis, tension between the shoulder blades, headaches starting at the base of the skull: the neck pays for screen work, the phone, stress and, in cyclists, a position that is too stretched out. Osteopathy works on the mobility of the cervical vertebrae, the upper back and the shoulders.

The signs that bring people to consult

  • Stiffness or pain in the neck, difficulty turning the head
  • Stiff neck after a night’s sleep or a sudden movement
  • Headaches that start in the neck and spread to the temples or forehead
  • Tension between the shoulder blades, hunched shoulders
  • Tingling in the arm or hand (to be assessed)

What I do during the session

  1. Examination of the neck, upper back, shoulders and jaw
  2. Gentle mobilisation and release techniques, manipulations only where indicated and with your consent
  3. Work on breathing and the diaphragm when stress is involved
  4. Advice on your workstation, your pillow and, for cyclists, handlebar height

When to see a doctor first

Neck pain after an injury, with dizziness, visual disturbance, fever or weakness in an arm needs a medical opinion first.

All the signs for which I refer you to a doctor first

Osteopathy does not replace medical care. I work alongside your GP, your midwife or your paediatrician when necessary.

FAQ

Your questions

Does the osteopath “crack” the neck?

Not systematically. Cervical manipulations are only performed where indicated, after examination, and with your consent. Many gentle techniques give equally good results.

Can headaches come from the neck?

Yes, a significant share of so-called tension headaches has a cervical origin or is linked to the neck muscles. The examination makes it possible to check.

On the bike, my neck hurts after 1 hour: bike fit or osteopathy?

Often both: releasing the thoracic stiffness in a session, then raising or bringing in the handlebar. A bike fit solves the problem for the long term.
