MTB bike fit

On an MTB, the position changes constantly: seated on climbs, standing on descents, hips pushed back on steep slopes. The bike fit does not look for a single position but for a setup that works in all these situations, with a dropper post used to the full and cleats that do not twist the knee when pedalling out of the saddle.

What changes

What the bike fit looks at for MTB

  • Saddle height for seated pedalling, and dropper post travel checked for descending
  • Handlebar width and height according to your shoulders and your riding (XC, trail, enduro)
  • SPD cleats: alignment, fore-aft position and float, with the knee checked when pedalling out of the saddle
  • Stem length and reach to keep control without overloading the hands
  • Ankle and hip mobility, decisive for the “attack” position on descents

What to bring: your MTB, your shoes with cleats (or flat pedals), your protective gear if you ride with it.

Typical pain

AreaCommon postural cause
Kneesaddle too low on climbs, SPD cleats rotated too far inwards
Hands and forearmshandlebar too low or too far forward, braking, lack of shoulder mobility
Lower backlong seated climbs with a locked pelvis
Neckposition too low in XC

I treat the pain with osteopathy if needed, then I correct the position so it does not come back. Osteopath for cyclists.

Reviews

« I went to Gaspard for a bike fit and I was not disappointed! Very calm, composed, attentive, takes his time, excellent advice (a saddle model better suited to my body), ultra-professional equipment. Available afterwards by email or message for questions, very responsive. I went back to see him after the changes he had recommended: there is real follow-up. I highly recommend him, with my eyes closed! »

« Great work by Gaspard! A few hundred kilometres after he reviewed my bike setup and gave me advice on pedalling properly, no more knee or back pain. The way to go if you want to ride for hours without trouble. »

« I went to see Gaspard because I had been suffering from pain in my right knee for over 2 years, especially on the bike. After one osteopathy session and a bike fit, the pain has completely gone. Impressive result, the pleasure of riding back in a single session. Very professional and effective work. I highly recommend him! »

FAQ

MTB bike fit: your questions

Is a bike fit useful for enduro or only for XC?

Both. In XC, it targets climbing efficiency. In enduro, it targets control on descents and prevention of hand, shoulder and back pain on long transfers.

How do you analyse the standing position?

On the indoor trainer pedalling out of the saddle and with mobility tests off the bike (ankles, hips, shoulders). The attack position depends first on your mobility.

I also ride on the road, can you set up both bikes?

Yes. The second bike is set up for an extra €60 on the same day.
